petanque Pétanque on the Pantiles

When: Tuesday 27th July 2010 from 7pm
Where: meet at Woods Restaurant in the Pantiles
What to bring: a set of boules if you have them; pack of Gauloises for effect (optional); a cocked hat to knock your twuddling pals into, as sported by young ’60′s French pop sensation Johnny Hallyday here

Johnny Hallyday gets the ball rolling

This is the first outing of hopefully many, so it’s a little unpredictable to what degree we will be split between amateurs n hot shots, but team configurations (if you want to play in a team) are comprised:

- triplets, with two teams of three players each (two boules per player)
- doublets, with two teams of two players each (three boules per player)
- singles, played between two players (three boules per player)

I will bring along 3 sets and believe a few more tweeps will bring along their own sets on the night.

An overview of the basics:

A coin is tossed to decide which side goes first. The starting team draws a circle on the ground (35-50cm in diameter), all players must throw their boules from within this circle, with both feet remaining on the ground. The first player throws the jack (cochonnet) 6–10 mtrs away; it must be at least one mtr from the boundary. Points are scored when both teams have no more boules, or when the jack is knocked out of play. The winning team receives one point for each boule that it has closer to the jack than the best-placed boule of the opposition. If the jack is knocked out of play, the end is void unless only one team has boules left to play. In this case the team with boules receives one point for each that they have to play.

Twuddle Rules for the night – Updated!

- triplets, with two teams of three players each (two boules per player)

Normally the first team to reach 13 points wins.  But judging by your responses and estimating how many players/teams there will be on the night, if we wait to reach 13 points in each round we will be there till dawn! So I propose we organise ourselves into 8 teams, 3 players per team, 2 boules each. First and second game split between 2 pitches (opp Woods & Swan), 2 teams playing at a time on 2 pitches. The first four teams that win by 2 points go through to next round. That’s presuming you all want to play in teams. No doubt thats all as clear as mud, but with the aid of @audioruler’s spreadsheet skills and football lingo, it should make sense on the night… Either that or we throw out the rulebook and go freestyle :-)

How we work out who is  “il est fanny” or “il a fait fanny” is anyone’s guess…

Its an open invitation so all welcome and hope to see you there!

Karen, our collective Twuddle boules are in your capable hands. I think I understand the rules… but I most certainly won’t after a few pints at the Ragged Trousers. And to think I cancelled a dentist appointment just to attend. Someone gonna video this?
